About the home
There are around 52 million people born between 1966 and 1985 – who have been categorized as Generation X. They’re the folks who were born after Baby Boomers and have very different attitudes and aspirations to the generation before them! This home, designed by Canin Associates of Orlando, was purposely created for a multi-generational and blended Gen X family.
Masterfully designed, the 4,732 square feet open concept house was built for BUILDER magazine’s Concept Home project as part of the National Association of Home Builders 2012 International Builders’ Show. It combines an efficient use of space with visual excitement and stimulating views and features over 1,015 square feet of outdoor living!

Flexible living
The home specifically caters to the very different lifestyle needs of the Generation X family. Multiple functions such as the family room, kitchen and eating area are located in one space to provide truly flexible living. The open concept design is matched by a focus on outdoor living too – with wonderful and easy to maintain patios and decks.
Sunshine and shading
Five recessed motorized retractable screens by Phantom were installed at the rear of the house to deliver a wonderful combination of solar shading and protection from bugs. It means that the homeowners can make the most of the favorable Florida climate and enjoy outdoor living pretty much all year round.
Disappearing motorized screens
Our motorized screens’ tracks and housings were fully recessed into the actual building, so they disappear completely from view – and maximize the view to the outdoors. The mesh type that was chosen (Superscreen 17/17) was a dark color which makes for great visibility even when the screens are lowered.
